
Elgar wrote this for his fiancé Caroline Alice Roberts and presented to her in 1888. Op. 12 was originally called Liebesgrüss (Love's Greeting) as Ms. Roberts was fluent in German. Shortly afterwards, Elgar's publisher encouraged the title switch to French, being a language more accessible to a larger audience and sales then took off.
